Hooked Rug Show Planned at Canandaigua Congregational Church
The Rug Hookers of the Chosen Spot will hold an exhibit of hooked rugs at the First Congregational Church of Canandaigua on Friday, Sept 20 and Saturday, Sept. 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The church is located at 58 N. Main Street, Canandaigua 14424. The public is welcome and there is no charge to attend. Rug hooking is an ancient craft that spread to America through the Canadian Maritime provinces. Originally homemakers made practical rugs from old clothing and burlap sacks. Rug making enjoyed a resurgence in the 21st century and has developed into a fine craft shown at galleries across the United States and Canada. The hooked rug show will include about 50 hand hooked rugs on various themes, including the Canandaigua Lake area. There will be many rugs on the theme of woman suffrage that were previously exhibited at the National Women's Hall of Fame. Some rugs will be available for sale, with proceeds shared by the church.
